When Trauma Doesn’t Resolve On It’s Own

Many people experience emotional and sleep difficulties after a traumatic event. Frequently these symptoms lessen over time. However a significant portion of people end up with long term emotional problems. Chronic PTSD refers to trauma symptoms that persist for a long period of time after a traumatic event. When PTSD is chronic it can feel like the external world has moved on, but your mind and nervous system are still stuck in the past. EMDR Therapy can be a significant support to help your mind and body process the lasting trauma responses and allow you to feel more healthy and whole again.

Common Signs of Chronic PTSD

Everyone else seems to have moved forward, but you are still responding with distress even months or years later. With Chronic PTSD you may notice:

  • Intrusive memories, nightmares, or flashbacks
  • Feeling persistently highly distressed and overwhelmed
  • High levels of negative emotions such as anger, shame, guilt, and fear
  • Making efforts to avoid of reminders of the events
  • Difficulty relaxing or feeling safe
  • Feeling detached or estranged from others
  • Intense emotional reactivity
  • Ongoing anxiety, hypervigilance, or feeling “on edge”

Specialized EMDR Therapy for High-Functioning Adults

Many people with Chronic Post-Traumatic Stress do not identify with the stereotyped image of someone with PTSD as a basket case who cannot function. They are competent, accomplished, and outwardly successful. They manage demanding careers, relationships, and responsibilities. However, internally they carry persistent tension, emotional reactivity, negativity, and exhaustion. They are aware that they are not at their best.

The EMDR approach can be particularly well-suited for individuals who are thoughtful, analytical, and highly self-aware, but have not been able to think themselves out of their negative responses to memories or triggers.

Let's Get Started

Why EMDR Is Especially Effective for Chronic Trauma

Chronic Post-Traumatic Stress responses reflect a nervous system remaining in a perpetual state of arousal long after the original traumatic experiences have passed. EMDR therapy offers a focused, evidence-based way to address these patterns at their source: processing the original traumatic event. EMDR works directly with how traumatic experiences are stored in the brain and body.

Rather than relying on insight alone, EMDR helps the nervous system reprocess unresolved experiences, allowing the brain to update and reestablish safety and calm.

For Chronic Post-Traumatic Stress, EMDR can help:

  • Reduce anxiety and hyperarousal
  • Improve emotion regulation
  • Decrease somatic tension and physical stress symptoms such as muscle tension, upset stomach, and head aches
