What is Complex PTSD?

Complex PTSD (CPTSD or c-PTSD) results from prolonged, repeated trauma which often occurs in childhood or in captivity, in situations where escape was difficult or impossible. It includes core PTSD symptoms (flashbacks, avoidance, hypervigilance) plus deep difficulties with emotion regulation, a negative sense of self, and stress in relationships.

Complex PTSD is related to repeated events that occurred over a long period of time, as opposed to a single traumatic incident.

EMDR Therapy for Complex PTSD.

Life with Complex PTSD can be exhausting and discouraging. You do your best to take care of yourself and move on and still feel overwhelmed, have persistent self-doubt, struggle with relationships, or feel a constant low level sense of threat which spikes with certain triggers. Complex trauma affects not just memories of the past, but also how your nervous system responds to everyday life.

Healing is possible. EMDR Therapy with Dr. Young is an opportunity to work with a therapist who truly understands the depth and complexity of developmental and relational trauma, and has the skills to help you get through it.

Let's Get Started

Understanding Complex PTSD

Complex PTSD develops from repeated or long-term trauma, especially when safety, support, or choices were limited or non-existent. This may include childhood traumatic experiences, physical and emotional neglect, chronic relational trauma, intentionally inflicted harm, or prolonged exposure to unsafe environments.

Common physical and emotional experiences related to Complex PTSD include:

  • Emotional flashbacks and intense reactions that feel disproportionate or confusing
  • Chronic shame, self-criticism, or feelings unworthiness
  • Difficulty trusting others or maintaining close relationships
  • Nervous system dysregulation (anxiety, numbness, hypervigilance, shutdown, explosive anger)
  • Persistent exhaustion from managing daily life while living with unprocessed trauma

These patterns are not character flaws, they are adaptive survival responses that once helped you cope.

Why EMDR Is Especially Effective for Complex PTSD

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is one of the most effective, research-supported approaches for trauma, and it can be especially powerful for Complex PTSD when delivered with expertise and care.

For Complex Trauma, EMDR:

  • Helps process traumatic memories
  • Soothes and calms nervous system reactivity
  • Targets early attachment wounds and deeply held negative beliefs
  • Reduces emotional reactivity
  • Increases emotional regulation and stability

Because Complex PTSD involves multiple layers of trauma, EMDR therapy might need to be a longer-term commitment than treatment for single-incident trauma. This is due to the depth of healing required and the importance of doing the work thoroughly and effectively.

Dr. Young provides A Thoughtful, Skilled Approach to EMDR

Not all EMDR therapy is the same. Treating Complex PTSD requires:

  • Advanced EMDR training and specialization
  • Careful assessment and thorough conceptualizing and treatment planning
  • Therapist confidence in and comfort with the EMDR process
  • A deep understanding of attachment and relational trauma

I offer highly expert EMDR care, grounded in extensive experience working with complex trauma. Therapy is tailored to you. Together we will explore your history, your goals, and your nervous system, and tailor the EMDR process to fit your specific needs.

Compassion for the Daily Impact of Trauma

I understand how frustrating it can be to function outwardly while struggling internally. Complex PTSD often affects:

  • Intimate relationships and communication
  • Work performance and confidence
  • Emotional regulation and self-trust
  • The ability to rest, feel safe, or enjoy life fully

My approach is both efficient and compassionate, respecting your time and energy while acknowledging how hard this work can be.
